The US government has officially created the first Atlantic-based national marine monument off the coast of Cape Cod – the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. It covers an area of 4,913 square miles and is an underwater version of Yellowstone with a forest, caverns, plant life, and marine creatures. Many activists are celebrating the new monument’s creation while opponents say protecting the area will negatively impact the red crab and lobster fishing industries.
